GREENWICH — The annual Golf for Abilis tournament fund-raiser will be held rain or shine at The Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. on Sept. 26, an all-day event that starts at 9:30 a.m. with breakfast, a tournament start at noon and cocktails and dinner to finish off the event.

Abilis, which serves close to 700 people with special needs and their families, uses the event to help pay for its programs, which include social services, running homes allowing people with special needs to live independently and job placement services.

The event is being hosted by Fred Trump, a Greenwich resident and nephew of the Republican presidential nominee.

Abilis, a human services organization that provides supports for individuals with special needs and their families in Fairfield County received a $19,000 grant award from The Community Fund of Darien which will go toward the hiring and training of a job coach.

Abilis serves over 700 individuals a year, including 200 adults with developmental disabilities in its day services program. In keeping with its desire to help all participants lead productive and meaningful lives, Abilis works diligently to provide competitive employment opportunities.

The Abilis Community Foundation generously awarded a $10,000 grant to the YMCA of Greenwich to develop a new swimming program for children with special needs. Beginning this fall, the course will teach basic water safety and swimming concepts to children with disabilities and their caregivers.

The program will utilize the YMCA’s warm water historic pool to introduce fundamental water skills, stroke development with waterside safety and prevention skills for caregivers. As a leading nonprofit committed to youth development, the YMCA of Greenwich has been a leader in providing swim lessons and water safety in Greenwich for 100 years.

Abilis, an organization supporting people with developmental disabilities, generated over $300,000 in its most successful gala to date with Spring for Abilis at The Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich on April 30.

With more than 220 guests, the gala was an elegant affair in which both loyal and new supporters came together to raise awareness and funding for individuals of all ages with special needs in the extended community.
