Quarterly Discussion Series
For Parents/Guardians

 

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are pleased to announce a new quarterly workshop series for parents and guardians of Abilis community members. As part of our ongoing commitment to support and empower our community, these workshops and discussion groups are tailored to provide insights and guidance on various aspects of care and planning for your loved ones as well as provide a supportive environment where you can connect with fellow parents and share experiences.

Each quarterly workshop will delve into areas that directly impact the lives of our people with disabilities and their families, followed by a Q&A with speakers and Abilis staff members. Topics will include, but are not limited to:

1. Financial Planning: Gain valuable knowledge about financial strategies, benefits, and resources available to support your family member's needs. Michael Beloff, Amy Hula, and Kim Trudden.

2. Legal Considerations: Learn about legal frameworks, guardianship, supportive decision-making, estate planning, and other legal matters crucial to securing a stable future for your loved ones. Workshop speakers: Carol Mandras, Amy Montimurro, and Michael Beloff.

3. Residential Options: Explore various residential arrangements and housing solutions that align with your family member's requirements, preferences, and funding streams. Workshop speakers: Amy Montimurro, Jennifer O’Gorman, Laura Lategui, and Kim Trudden.

4. Day and Job Supports: Discover opportunities and strategies for meaningful day programs that promote skill development and social interaction; as well as information on job placement and vocational training and supports. Workshop speakers: Amy Montimurro, Luis Velazquez, and Kim Trudden.

Following each workshop, there will be interactive breakout sessions facilitated by Abilis staff members. These sessions will provide you with the chance to discuss current issues, seek personalized advice, and address any concerns you might have.

The workshops will be held in person on a quarterly basis. The tentative schedule for the upcoming workshops is as follows:

1. Wednesday, October 18, 2023, 6:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m. - Financial Planning Workshop

2. Wednesday, January 10, 2024, 6:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m. - Legal Considerations Workshop

3. Wednesday, April 17, 2024, 6:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m. - Residential Options Workshop

4. Wednesday, June 19, 2024, 6:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m. - Day and Job Supports Workshop
