LaRusso was born with Down syndrome, a genetic disorder that would have once limited her life span to less than half of that. Instead, she is a thriving member of her Pemberwick community, with many friends, a big family, a job that’s lasted for 30 years and enough Special Olympics medals to fill a box.
“When she was born, her doctor told me that she should be put in a home because it wasn’t fair to take her home because I had five other children already. We couldn’t afford to put her in a home, though, and we asked the town for help,” said her mother Grace LaRusso, who just turned 101.
