POSITION: Associate Counselor- Overnight Asleep

PROGRAM ASSIGNMENT: An Abilis Residential Program

 SCHEDULED WORK TIME: The schedule is developed by the Program Manager. The Associate Overnight Asleep Counselor shall be scheduled for up to 40 hours per week. This is a regular full- time position.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: The Program Manager assigned to the house and the Program Coordinator or Supervising Counselor when delegated by the Program Manager.

SUPERVISES: Participants within the program.



Education: High School Diploma

Work Experience: One year of human service experience.

Substitution for Education: Four years of human service experience.


• Ability to be understood by agency participants.
• A valid drivers license that allows a person to be insured as designated by our vehicle insurance carrier.
• Ability to operate agency vehicles in a safe manner as authorized by the agency’s driver certification program.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to summon emergency personnel or the agency’s emergency call list.
• Ability to become and maintain necessary medication and CPR certifications.
• Ability to follow through with and update, in a timely fashion, all other necessary trainings as outlined by agency, state, and federal guidelines.
• Be physically able to perform CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.
• Ability to provide “eyes on” supervision of Abilis participants.
• Be able to use all equipment and adaptive equipment safely and effectively.
• Ability to implement program goals and deal with participants behavioral issues.
• Be able to physically access program locations.


An Associate Overnight Asleep Counselor must demonstrate the maturity to work with a number of people of varied backgrounds and handicaps and show empathy toward persons with handicaps and their families.

The Associate Overnight Asleep Counselor is responsible for assisting Adult Services personnel in direct care of the residents and in implementing the goals of the resident's Overall Plan of Services.

A. Key Area of Responsibility: To assist with daily resident care:

Specific duties:

• Aides in evaluating assigned residents in the following areas:
• grooming and hygiene
• meal preparation
• money management
• housekeeping
• interpersonal relations
• use of leisure time
• use of community resources
• self image/personal growth toward increased independence
• medication administration
• safety precautions

• Participates in day-to-day activities and programs with residents under direction of the Residence Manager and in accordance with each resident's individual plan. Daily activities and training areas include:
• cooking
• cleaning
• laundry
• recreation and leisure activities
• money management
• grooming
• communication skills
• utilizing community resources
• medication administration
• individual rights & choices

• Participate in communication among staff assigned to home in order to provide continuity in implementation of Overall Plan of Services.

• Inform supervising counselor or manager of significant concerns/problems/activities within the home which may affect residents or others.

• To become acquainted with the philosophy, programs and practices and goals of the Residence and the Abilis Greenwich.

• To complete training courses which may be required by the State of Connecticut for maintenance of licensure of the home.

• To participate in other meetings or programs related to staff development as appropriate.
