Abilis Residential Services

Abilis offers a variety of living arrangements based on the desires and needs of each individual and family.

Group living Our beautiful homes in Stamford and Greenwich are licensed by the state of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services and are indistinguishable from others in their neighborhood.

Abilis attempts to connect housemates of similar ages and interests. Same and mixed-gender housing are available. Staff provide 24-hour supervision, along with health monitoring, psychological services and a wide array of community recreation services. The ratio of staff to residents is set by the state of Connecticut according to need.

Most of our homes are close to public transportation and all welcome visits from family members. Abilis provides transportation services for residents. A limited number of “respite” beds are available in our group homes for people with developmental disabilities as a service for families, either to give a break to families who care for a person with a developmental disability or to provide backup during a family emergency.

Intermediate Care Facilities Abilis operates homes, with a higher ratio of staff to residents, for people requiring more intensive medical and/or behavorial support. In addition to the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services, these homes are licensed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

Homeshare provides unique opportunities for individuals to enjoy a more independent lifestyle and to share experiences with a friend in the Greenwich-Stamford area. This program connects a person with a disability with a housemate without a disability, who provides informal support and guidance. Abilis helps both housemates and, if necessary, provides additional support for the housemate with a disability. Homeshare arrangements are overseen by the state Department of Developmental Services.

Supported living is another opportunity for independence for people who do not require 24-hour support. Residents rent an apartment in the Stamford-Greenwich area by themselves or with a roommate of their choice. Abilis can help people find homes/apartments and suitable housemates. We also lend assistance with budgeting, menu planning, food shopping and preparation, health needs and also help to connect individuals with family and community leisure activities. Supported living arrangements are overseen by the state Department of Developmental Services.

At Abilis Adult Services

All of us want a safe, comfortable place to live in our own community, with opportunities for recreation, leisure and personal growth and ways to connect with friends who care for us. Abilis Adult Services helps adults with intellectual disabilities find that place.

We begin by interviewing individuals and their family and friends to get to know them and their family and friends to get to know them and their dreams. Abilis uses specific planning processes that empower people with disabilities to define a direction for their own lives. We believe in choice. Abilis embraces person-centered planning, a process that builds a support system based on what is important to each individual. We look at the person first and tailor the response to him or her. Services may vary from person to person based on these individual plans.
