Parent to Parent
The following is offered through the Abilis Parent to Parent Network:
- Immediate support to families who have learned their child has developmental or health related needs.
Support to new members in community. - Help to families in accessing resources, programs and services.
- Help to build family support systems through respite care, babysitting services and other services.
- Assistance to families with particular issues/crises that they may face in parenting a child with developmental or health related needs.
- Factual information about issues families may need to learn more about, such as the IEP process, guardianship, behavior management and benefits.
- Networking with members of the medical community who are the first persons to make diagnosis and communicate with the family.
- Ongoing meetings to provide support and continuing education.
- Ongoing information to families through the use of a newsletter and a parent library.
Services Available:
One-to-One Matches
This program offers a one-to-one match of parents with trained listeners who have had similar experiences. The listeners have achieved some perspective on their experiences through time and training and offer newly referred parents, an empathic ear and support.
Path, Parent to Parent of CT Newsletter
A state wide publication of inspiring personal stories and helpful information, is printed 3 times a year.
Parent Meetings
Meetings are held monthly to provide parents a chance to share experiences and information (Pizza Moms, Dad’s Night out).
Lending Library
Equipment, books and videos.
Orientation Packets
For professionals and families.
Workshops
Meetings open to the public, featuring qualified professionals, speaking on a variety of topics of interest to our families.
Social Function
Annual parent to parent picnic.
