Abilis Employment Services
Abilis Employment Services works with regional employers from the public and private sectors to develop work and community opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities in lower Fairfield County.
People supported by Abilis provide high-quality, reliable service at competitive rates. Our goal is to help people find and maintain meaningful jobs and actively participate in their communities. Abilis has offered employment training and placement services for adults with disabilities since the mid-1970s, based on the following beliefs.
- Everyone has a need to feel useful and contribute to his or her community.
- Earning a living improves the quality of life.
- There is satisfaction in doing a good job that is valued by others.

At Abilis, we know jobs can help move people closer to their dreams. We devote time, effort and care to helping adults with intellectual disabilities explore career options, gain confidence and independence, and find meaningful employment in the community.
Life Skills and Career Preparation covers such basics as cooking and cleaning, phone and computer skills, using public transportation, grocery shopping, counting money and financial skills.
Job Placement and Support matches adults with jobs in the community, following extensive thought and assessment of ability and interests, and always keeping in mind the goals and dreams of each individual. Abilis staff meets with potential employers to determine the type and scale of job and the timetable. From there, we provide a competitive price and options to meet employers’ needs. We remain engaged to help negotiate terms of employment, educate managers and staff, assist with transportation and reassess the work arrangement based on changes in personnel, job description, environment, location and other factors. All employees are insured by Abilis.
On the job, an Abilis Job Coach works to acclimate each individual with the work and the work environment. The job coach also serves as a liaison for the employer and other staff at the work site to ensure good communication, encourage respect and provide other support needed to maintain the job.

Over the years, Abilis Employment Services successfully has placed people in retail, grocery, landscaping, courier, bulk mailing, office support, light assembly and food-service positions, as well as in professional offices throughout our communities. People served by Abilis also are deeply involved as community volunteers in libraries, places of worship, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, among other locations.
